Guild of Tokens

Guild of TokensGuild of Tokens by Jon Auerbach
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Guild of Tokens is a modern urban fantasy that bring the grind of rpgs to life for Jen Jacobs. Jen by day is a video game developer., at night she is working her way up the ranks by questing from the quest board. She soon grows tired of the gathering item quests and sets out to learn the why behind the quests.

This book is very well written, the plot will keep you guessing, and watching Jen go from mild mannered doormat into a confident problem solver. Most of the change happens after she meets Beatrice an alchemist that teaches her the things she has been wanting to know. Jens opinion of Beatrice changes as she finds out more about her dark past.

The magic in this book is more of a natural style magic instead of users wielding god like powers. The magic system is tied mainly to alchemy, the art of mixing compounds to get new materials. The magic is all around you just have to know where to find it. I liked where it was found anywhere from fruit to rodent internal organs.

I listened to the audiobook for this one and really enjoyed it. Tavia Gilbert is the narrator and she did an excellent job. I liked that there was no extra sound effects added to the book as I find those very distracting.

This was a fast fun book to go through especially if you like the LitRPG genre. I am looking forward for more from this series.
